The word Inn comes from the Old English, inne, which means inside or within, and its original meaning was lodging and food for travelers. It’s a commercial establishment founded to provide lodging and food for the public, especially travelers. They also provided accommodation for the traveler’s horse before the advent of modernization. Simply put, it’s a place to stay while you’re on the road or vacation. Inns are usually more charmer and smaller than hotels, but their purpose is the same. Both give you a place to rest your weary head while traveling.
Initially, Inns were built like bread and breakfast, with a community dining room that is sometimes used for wedding parties and other important gatherings. The front was usually built to face the road as a sign of welcome. The back always had at least one livery barn or stable for travelers to keep their horses. Some of these inns were located in the country or along a highway, especially between two neighboring towns, so that travelers can rest their bones and continue the next day. With the absence of lobbies, the innkeeper has the responsibility of answering each visitor before deciding on whom to accommodate. Many inns were merely large houses with extra rooms for renting.
During the 19th century, the inn played a significant role in the growing transportation system in England. Industrialization was on the rise, and people traveled more to keep and maintain their businesses, so the inns served as a point of rest for those frequently traveling.
With the modernization of modes of transport, lodgings and inns have adapted to serve each generation of travelers. Separate establishments, including hotels and motels, now share the primary functions of an inn. These establishments might provide the same traditional functions of an inn, but their main focus is in lodging more customers than other services.
Despite all these, inns’ historical advancement and improvement will always distinguish it from other hospitality services. At Sage Inn, your comfort and general wellbeing is our utmost concern.
